War with Iraq: Country factfile
Iraq, a country half the size of Sweden, has a rich history going back 7,000 years to ancient Mesopotamia. Modern Iraq was born from a succession of civilizations that thrived along the fertile and flood plains of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. In the 20th centry Ottoman rule was finally brought to an end by British occupation during the first world war and Iraq became independent in 1932 – its borders largely dictated by the British.
