Permafrost: Greenhouse gases rise from melting northern ice
Vast quantities of carbon and methane are frozen in the permafrost of the far north. The carbon originates in the plant and animal matter that accumulated over millennia, not decomposing in the frigid temperatures and becoming locked in deeper and deeper permanently frozen soil.
