Interactive Graphic: How a railgun work

Railguns use a supercharged magnetic field to fire a projectile at Mach 7, working much like a fiercely energized slingshot. The GPS-guided weapon is so fast it doesn’t need an explosive component to blow up a target – it uses the energy from the projectile itself. The Navy hopes that by 2025 these guns will replace standard 5-inch guns that require explosives.
