Chilean Miner Rescue: Chile Mine Collapse

Rescuers in Chile made final preparations Tuesday to begin pulling 33 trapped miners to the surface. An interactive about the Aug. 5 mine collapse and ensuing rescue effort has been updated with an explainer about what the extraction process entails.

This interactive graphic from AP.org includes four types of interactives:

  1. Video – view the rescue of each miner
  2. Step graphics – view the process from the wall collapse August 5 through the dramatic rescue October 13
  3. Animated graphics – view the capsule’s path as it descended from the surface to retrieve each miner
  4. Interactive timeline – view a detailed summary of the 69-day ordeal
