Metallica’s new album, “Death Magnetic,” has become the latest flashpoint in a little-known music-industry fight referred to as the “loudness war.” Over the years, artists have increasingly sought to make their recordings sound louder so that they will stand out on the radio, jukeboxes and iPods. To make music “louder,” engineers must reduce the dynamic range, minimizing the difference between the soft and loud parts of the song.
